COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina equestrian coach Boo Major on Monday announced the signing of hunt seat rider Sydney Callaway (San Diego, Calif./Fusion Academy) to a National Letter of Intent to join the Gamecocks for the 2015-16 season.
“We’d like to welcome Sydney and her family to our program,” Major said. “We’ve been watching her for several years and she initially decided she wasn’t going to ride for a college team, but we were thrilled when she called us in the spring interested in becoming a Gamecock. Sydney is an extremely gifted rider and I think she’s going to be able to help us right away both on the flat and over fences.”
Callaway trains with Lori de Rosa and competes in the jumpers and in equitation.
In 2014, she won the Ronnie Mutch Championship at Thermal, while also competing in all of the major equitation finals. At the Washington International Horse Show, Callaway was the high point qualifier in 2014 and finished second in 2015.
She is the daughter of James and Kimberly Callaway, and she has a brother, Trevor Callaway, and a sister, Nikki Callaway.
While at South Carolina, Callaway plans to major in exercise science.
