Leading the way is assistant head coach Delethea Quarles, who is leading the Team USA women’s squad into the event. Natasha Hastings and Johnny Dutch, who are in the hunt for medals and a chance at the 2016 Olympic games, join Coach Dee on the national team. Hastings will compete in the 400-meter dash and is in the 4x400m relay pool, and ranks sixth in the world for the 400 so far this year. She has a shot at her third-straight Olympics with a solid performance. Dutch is enjoying a standout season in the 400-meter hurdles, and already owns two of the top three times in the world so far in 2015 and could punch a ticket to his first Olympics in 2016.
Three other Gamecocks are competing for their home countries at the upcoming games: Kierre Beckles, Jeannelle Scheper and Shevon Stoddart. Representing Barbados, Beckles will run in the 100-meter hurdles and has the 19th-fastest time in the world so far this season. She is coming off a bronze medal in the event at the NACAC Senior meet in the first week of August.
Scheper will compete for St. Lucia in the high jump. Despite being the most recent graduate of the group, Scheper has already enjoyed a decorated career for her country and recently competed at the Pan-American Games in Toronto. Her program-record-setting height of 1.96 meters still stands as the sixth-best mark in the world.
Stoddart is again a major part of a talented Jamaican national team, and will compete in the 400-meter hurdles. Her top time of the season puts her at 19th internationally. With a solid performance, she stands to make her third Olympic games in the event, following up appearances at the 2004 and 2008 games.
The entire meet will air live on NBC’s Universal Sports network. Check your local listings to see if you receive Universal Sports channel.
