COLUMBIA, S.C. – Senior high jumper Jeannelle Scheper was named the Women’s Field Athlete of the Week Tuesday afternoon, as the SEC released its weekly awards. It is Scheper’s second time earning the honor, and comes after a weekend where she extended her national lead and climbed in the world rankings for the high jump.
At the Florida Relays, the St. Lucian native passed 1.95 meters (6-4 3/4) on her first try, breaking her own school record by an inch and a half and setting a new lifetime best to win the event. Her previous best of 1.92 meters came at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championships while competing for her home country in 2013.
She maintains her title as the national collegiate leader by 3 ¼ inches over second place and also jumps up to number two in the world, trailing only Australia’s Eleanor Patterson’s 1.96 meters.
Nationally, Scheper was acknowledged as an honorable mention for the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week, an award she earned previously on March 24. Next up for the Gamecocks will be the Bill Carson Invitational, hosted by East Carolina April 10-11.
