Folland Captures SEC Player of the Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. Sophomore Brigit Folland from the 26th-ranked South Carolina women’s tennis team earned SEC Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Wednesday. It marks the first time in her career she has won the award and Folland is the first Gamecock this season to take home the accolade.

The Bristol, United Kingdom, native posted an unblemished record in singles and doubles last week against Alabama and Auburn. Versus Auburn, she clinched the Gamecocks’ upset of the Tigers with a three-set victory on court three against Emily Flickinger. Folland trailed 5-2 in the first set and 4-1 in the third before securing the 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 triumph.

With South Carolina trailing Alabama 3-1, Folland kept the team’s hopes alive by overcoming a first-set loss and a 3-1 deficit against No. 56 Maya Jansen to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Jansen is the highest ranked player Folland has defeated this season and is the second highest ranked player she was beaten in her career. Folland also combined with Meghan Blevins to clinch the doubles point versus the Tide with an 8-5 victory over Natalia Maynetto and Emily Zabor.

Folland stands 18-10 this season overall in singles play and is 6-3 in dual matches. She and Blevins form the Gamecocks’ top doubles tandem this season with a 20-3 record that includes an 8-1 mark for dual matches. Folland also has the squad’s best individual doubles slate with an impressive 25-4 record.
