CARY, N.C. – South Carolina will have seven singles and three doubles entries in the USTA/ITA Carolinas Regional when the event opens tomorrow at Cary Tennis Park. No. 25 Andrew Adams, who drew the third seed in the event leads the contingent, which includes the season debut of senior Thiago Pinheiro as well. The 128-player singles field kicks off the action on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. with two rounds of play. Play in the 64-team doubles bracket begins on Fri., Oct. 17.
With the No. 3 seed, Adams drew a first-round bye and will face either Javier Restrepo (UNCW) or Vuk Velickovic (Coastal Carolina) in the second round. Adams is 3-4 on the season, including four matches against ranked opponents already after advancing to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket at the ITA All-American earlier this month.
Pinheiro and sophomore Andrew Schafer start off the morning for the Gamecocks with 8:30 a.m. matches. Pinheiro’s season debut will come against Clemson’s Fernando Sala. A victory in that match will pit the Brazilian against either Dreshaun Jarmon of North Carolina A&T or No. 59 Bruno Semenzato of Duke. After playing into the round of 16 at the SEC Fall Classic in Gainesville, Fla., a month ago, Schafer drew a spot in this tournament’s 17-32 seeds and will face Presbyterian’s Danny Bruce. The winner advances to play either John Wilson (NC A&T) or NC Central’s Jamal Hoyte.
Scheduled to start at 9:30, freshman Thomas Mayronne takes on Charlotte senior Alexander Calott, who thrived in the Nos. 4 and 5 singles positions for the 49ers last season. That match’s winner will face either Christian Seraphim (Wake Forest) or JD O’Brien (Winthrop) in second-round action.
Thanks to a march to the quarterfinals of the SEC Fall Classic, another Gamecock drawing a spot among the tournament’s 17-32 seeds is Kyle Koch, who will face Winthrop’s Tremayne Mitchell at 10 a.m. Thursday. A win will match South Carolina’s senior with either Chad Hoskins of North Carolina or Appalachian State’s Ollie Casey.
Freshman Harrison O’Keefe looks to shake off a tough singles debut last month with a 10:30 a.m. match against Elon freshman Joshua Luck. The winner of that match will take on either Daniel Strawn of Clemson or NC State’s Thomas Weigel Thursday afternoon. Sophomore Sam Swank is the last first-round starter of the day, serving it up at noon against Charlotte’s Forrest Edwards with the winner advancing to face either Haris Poric of Wofford or Clemson’s Daffra Sanon.
In Friday’s doubles action, Mayronne and O’Keefe will team up again, looking to move a step beyond their runner-up finish at the SEC Fall Classic last month. That effort placed them as a 9-16 seed at this week’s event, where they will take on Charleston’s team of Rodrigo Encinas in the first round. Schafer and Swank will open with Charlotte’s Calott and Edwards. After advancing to the quarterfinals of the SEC Fall Classic, Adams and Koch are seeded fifth in this tournament and will face Wofford’s Rob Galloway and Poric.
