Final Results

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Carding a 289 (+1) in today’s final round, No. 2 South Carolina took the runner-up spot this weekend’s Tar Heel Invitational at the UNC Finley Golf Course with a three-round total of 864 (E). No. 5 Duke, the defending NCAA Champions, captured the title with a 2-under 862.

Sophomore Katelyn Dambaugh led the Gamecocks today, surging over 20 spots on the leaderboard to finish in a tie for fifth with a final-round 68 (-4). Dambaugh posted a three-round total of 215 (+1). Freshman Nanna Madsen also finished tied for fifth after carding a 2-over 74, her only over-par round of the weekend after firing rounds of 69 and 72. Madsen has kicked off her collegiate career with two-straight top-10 finishes.

Junior Mary Fran Hillow rounded out her weekend with a 4-over 76 today for a three-day total of 217 (+1). She finished in tie for 11th place. A three-day score of 3-over for senior Justine Dreher landed the ANNIKA medalist in a tie for 17th place. Dreher shot a 73 (+1) in the final round.

In her best round of the event, sophomore Jia Xin Yang carded a 2-over 74 today. Yang finished in a tie for 59th with a 230 (+14).

The Gamecocks completed the weather-suspended second round this morning before the final round began. After leading the first round at 1-under, South Carolina was at 6-under when play was halted due to weather on the back nine yesterday. The Gamecocks entered the third and final round in second place after wrapping up the second round at 1-under (288), one stroke behind Duke.

Hillow and Madsen carded matching 72’s in the second round to enter the final round in a tie for third at 3-under.

In her first collegiate tournament, Ainhoa Olarra, who was competing as an individual, finished at 33-over par (T95).

The Blue Devils and Gamecocks were the only teams to finish at par or under. No. 25 NC State (+14), No. 20 Wake Forest (+16) and No. 3 Arkansas (+18) rounded out the tournament’s top 5.

No. 22 Virginia’s Lauren Diaz-Yi took medalist’s honors at 7-under (209).

KEY STAT

The Gamecocks led the field with 43 birdies in the event’s three rounds.

NOTABLES

• Sophomore Katelyn Dambaugh matched the lowest round fired by a Gamecock this season with her 68 today. Senior Justine Dreher shot a pair of 68s in her win at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate.
• Dambaugh led the Gamecocks with five birdies today, including three on the front nine, and recorded 11 birdies over the course of the tournament.
• Yet again, the Gamecocks took advantage of the par-5s, scoring 8-under to lead the field.
• South Carolina’s 854 matches the Gamecocks’ total at the 2010 NCAA East Regional as the fourth-best 54-hole score in program history.
• This weekend’s 18-team field featured 10 teams in the top 25 and eight SEC programs. The Gamecocks defeated all eight SEC foes at this weekend’s event.

We had a really good battle out there today. Duke kept firing birdies, and we kept answering. I’m proud of the way the team competed and responded. Katelyn really stepped up for us. It could have gone either way out there. We will get rested and prepared to win in Knoxville next week.

UP NEXT South Carolina continues the fall season at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Knoxville, Tenn. The event is set for Fri., Oct. 17 – Sun., Oct. 19, at the Cherokee Golf Club.
