COLUMBIA, S.C. – Steven Bondurant and Aaron Rawl combined to limit Radford to six hits Saturday and sixth ranked South Carolina defeated the Highlanders 7-1 to even a three-game non-conference baseball series at one game apiece.
The third game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Sunday at Sarge Frye Field. South Carolina improved its record to 12-3 and Radford dropped to 3-3.
Bondurant, 1-0, pitched the first six innings to claim the win. He allowed five hits, the only Radford run, walked two and struck out six. Rawl allowed one hit and walked one over the final three innings to earn his first save of the season. He struck out two. All the Radford hits were singles.
Cory Koliscak, 0-2, pitched into the seventh inning for Radford to take the loss.
Jon Coutlangus had three hits, scored two runs and drove in a run for South Carolina. Justin Harris and Kevin Melillo had two hits, including a double by each. Melillo drove in two runs and Harris had one RBI. South Carolina totaled 11 hits.
Michael Campbell singled, stole second and scored on the first of three hits by Coutlangus to open the South Carolina scoring in the second inning. Base hits by Harris and Melillo and a sacrifice fly by Brian Buscher made it 2-0 in the third.
South Carolina scored twice in the fifth inning to increase its lead to 4-0. Hank Parks walked, Coutlangus singled and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt. The double by Melillo drove in both runs.
Three hits and a Radford error add the final three Gamecock runs in the seventh inning. The double by Harris drove in one and two scored on the error.
Three hits by Alan Ashworth, Ryan Wetzel and Mark Fleisher, in the sixth inning accounted for the Radford run. Wetzel and Fleisher had two hits apiece for the Highlanders
