Julie Sarratt Earns SEC Pitcher of the Week Honors

March 17, 2014

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina redshirt junior Julie Sarratt earned Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week honors after helping South Carolina claim its first SEC series win of 2014.

Sarratt posted 17 strikeouts against four walks in 15.2 innings of work on the week, going 2-0 and picking up a save. Sarratt, from Gaffney, S.C., picked up a complete-game victory in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader against No. 13/15 Texas A&M, tossing a season-high 116 pitches while striking out nine batters, her best tally against an SEC team in her career. She came back and collected her fourth save of the season, getting the final four outs in the 4-3 win that clinched the series, the first for a Gamecock team over a ranked SEC opponent since 2009. It also stands as the first SEC series win inside the new Carolina Softball Stadium.

Sarratt now is tied for third all-time in saves at South Carolina with seven, while her fourth of the year moves her into a tie for fourth with five other Gamecocks in history. Her four saves put her among the top five in NCAA Division I.

A previous three-time winner of the SEC Freshman of the Week award, Sarratt gains her first pitcher’s honor, becoming the ninth South Carolina student-athlete to earn the award.

Georgia’s Alex Hugo claimed the Player of the Week award, while Tennessee’s Annie Aldrete won the Freshman of the Week certificate.

The Gamecocks host nationally-ranked Minnesota on Wed., March 19 at 6 p.m. at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field before traveling to Knoxville to face the Lady Vols in a three-game series. Sunday’s series finale is slated for a 2:30 p.m. EDT first pitch on ESPNU.
