COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina women’s tennis signee Hadley Berg won her first career International Tennis Federation event Sunday in Tinajo, Spain. Berg is set to join the Gamecocks in fall 2014.

Berg won the $10,000 F.T.A. International doubles title playing alongside fellow American Madison Westby. The duo recorded a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the quarterfinals against Anna Klasen from Germany and Italian Guilia Sussarello. In the semis, they needed three sets to beat the Italian tandem of Martina Caciotti and longtime pro Nicole Clerico by scores of 7-5, 1-6, (10-8). Berg and Westby posted another 6-4, 6-2 victory in the championship match against Yoshimi Kawasaki and Yumi Nakano, both experienced professionals from Japan.

“It was very encouraging to see Hadley put together two remarkable weeks in row at the $10,000 ITF level,” South Carolina head coach Kevin Epley said. “While I know Hadley has the doubles skills to compete with anyone, bridging the confidence gap between juniors and pros is a monumental task. I really couldn’t be happier for her and can’t wait to see her suit up as a Gamecock.”

Berg was ranked as high as the No. 52 recruit in the nation in 2013 by TennisRecruiting.net and is currently No. 66. A native of Greenbrae, Calif., Berg is ranked as the No. 11 prospect for her entire state. She is rated a four-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net and has also won numerous awards for sportsmanship during her junior career, including the prestigious USTA National Bill Talbert Sportsmanship Award for 2012. Additionally, she claimed awards for sportsmanship at the 2011 Girls’ 16s NorCal Sectional Championships and the 2012 Maze Cup.
