Columbia, S.C. – David Marchbanks pitched eight strong innings and Bryan Triplett drove in four runs as sixth ranked South Carolina defeated Gardner Webb 11-1 in a non-conference college baseball game.
The Gamecocks improved their record to 10-2 while Gardner Webb dropped to 8-5. South Carolina continues its home stand Wednesday with a 7 p.m., game against Furman at Sarge Frye Field.
Marchbanks improved his record to 4-0 in four starts. The junior left-hander allowed six hits, struck our eight and walked none. Gardner Webb starter Abe Gonzalez, 1-1, was charged with the loss.
The only run allowed by Marchbanks came in the third inning when Jim Glueckert doubled, moved to third on a ground ball and scored on another ground out. Glueckert had three hits in three at bats to account for half of the Gardner Webb hits.
South Carolina scored two first inning runs without a hit as Gonzalez walked four and Gardner Webb committed the game’s only error.
After the Bulldogs cut the Gamecock lead to 2-1 in the third inning, South Carolina scored one in the fifth to lead 3-1 before the Gamecocks broke the game open with four runs each in the seventh and eighth.
Triplett drove in three seventh inning runs with a bases loaded double, South Carolina’s only extra base blow among its 11 hits. Triplett’s other RBI was on a base hit in the eighth inning. Justin Harris singled home two runs in that inning.
Triplett, Michael Campbell, Brian Buscher, and Landon Powell had two hits each for the Gamecocks. Powell, McDaniel and Nick Gardiner each drove in a run.
Marchbanks lowered his earned run average to 1.91 in 28 1/3 innings. He had struck out 21 batters and walked only one.
