Henderson, Nevada – Nebraska scored seven runs in the top half of the fifth inning, defeating South Carolina, 9-1 in five innings at the UNLV Softball Classic.
The Cornhuskers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Gamecocks evened the score in the bottom of the second. Tia Rogers’ single drove in Melissa Sandel to make it 1-1. The Cornhuskers added another run in the top half of the fourth inning off USC starter Stacey Johnson (3-2). Johnson gave up two runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings. Freshman Melanie Henkes relieved Johnson in the fourth inning, but gave up seven runs on seven hits in the fifth inning.
With the loss, USC posted a 2-3 record at the Softball Classic, dropping their overall record to 7-4. The Gamecocks travel to Columbus, Georgia to participate in the Lead-Off Classic from February 21-23. USC plays Washington and Temple on the 21st and Michigan on the 22nd. Depending on the outcome of those games, the Gamecocks will participate in bracket play on the 23rd.
