COLUMBIA, S.C. –

Sophomore left-hander Jack Wynkoop hurled 5.1 scoreless innings as the Garnet squad defeated the Black team 4-0 in game one of the Garnet and Black World Series. Freshman Weber Pike went 2-for-4 with two RBI while sophmore Marcus Mooney also went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Game two is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Carolina Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Admission is free of charge.

In the top of the fourth inning Tanner English was hit by a pitch and would score off Pike’s hard hit single that took a bounce and sailed over the glove of first baseman Brison Celek.

Garnet went ahead 3-0 in the top of the fifth after Jordan Gore led off the frame with a double down the right field line and soon scored off Mooney’s base hit. Elliot Caldwell would reach base on an error by right fielder Patrick Harrington and both runners then advanced on a passed ball. Grayson Greiner grounded out to the second baseman and drove in Mooney for the third run.

Garnet increased the lead to 4-0 in the top of the seventh. With one out, Pike tripled to left-center and scored Greiner who walked to lead off the inning.

Wynkoop allowed no runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Junior right-hander Joel Seddon and senior right-hander Hunter Privette combined for two-plus innings of scoreless relief for the Garnet squad. Freshman right-hander Wil Crowe hurled four-plus innings for the Black team allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
