COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina’s Gamecock Productions group and student editor Valerie Gerfin earned a College Sports Media Award, presented by the Sports Video Group and National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) for the work on the 2013 South Carolina softball intro video.
In the student categories, the intro video won the award for the best promotion, public service announcement or video marketing campaign. The spot featured the Gamecock softball team amongst flames and some imagery from underneath the new Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field, an $8 million facility that opened in March.
“I want to thank coach Beverly Smith and the South Carolina softball team,” Gerfin said. “There aren’t a lot of coaches who would go along with lighting bats on fire.”
The Gamecocks finished 2013 with a 34-25 record, making both the SEC and NCAA tournaments for the first time under the direction of Smith in her third season. The team set six single-season records as a group offensively, including scoring 338 runs, the most in team history.
