On Friday, the Southeastern Conference announced that two individuals along with the women’s 4×400-meter relay foursome from the South Carolina track and field team earned All-SEC honors. Junior Jeannelle Scheper is the first Gamecock ever to earn All-SEC recognition for the high jump and freshman Kayla Lampe is the first Gamecock to earn the nod in the 5,000-meter run since 1992.
Scheper was named to the women’s First-Team All-SEC after her win in the high jump. Her gold was the first high jump SEC championship in school history. Scheper has broken her own school record twice this season and is currently tied for the collegiate lead with a clearance of 6’3 ½ (1.91m). Scheper is the first Gamecock woman to be named to the first-team since Lakya Brookins wad listed for the 60-meter dash in 2007.
After her silver medal in the women’s 5,000-meter run last weekend, Lampe was named Second-Team All-SEC. Lampe broke the 5K school record at the Armory Collegiate Invitational earlier in the season and has broken it twice since. Her time of 16:19.02 at the SEC Championships is the best ever for a Gamecock. She was also named to the women’s SEC All-Freshman Team for her performance.
The quartet of junior Erika Rucker, senior Kierre Beckles, freshman Tyler Brockington and sophomore Christal Green earned a Second-Team All-SEC spot after grabbing second in the women’s 4×400-meter relay last weekend. Their time of 3:33.68 is the seventh-fastest time this season. The last 4×400-meter appearance on the conference team was in 2010.
The winner in each event, including relays, earns first-team All-SEC recognition; the second-place finisher in each event, including relays, earns second-team All-SEC recognition, and the top freshman finisher in each event, excluding relays, earns SEC All-Freshman Team recognition.
The women are currently ranked No. 15 in the USTFCCCA rankings. The Gamecocks compete in NCAA Last Chance Qualifier meets this weekend before the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 8-9 in Fayetteville, Ark.
