FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Sophomore Chalese Davis opened the 2013 SEC Indoor Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center setting three new PRs in the women’s pentathlon to earn an eighth-place finish and the first point of the weekend for the Gamecocks. This marks the second-consecutive year that Davis has scored in the pentathlon.
Davis finished the day with 3,827 points, besting her 2012 SEC Indoor Championship-total of 3,667 by 160 points. Davis’ point put the Gamecocks on the board after the first event of the championships. Sophomore Erica Bougard of Mississippi State was thought to have claimed second place initially, but was disqualified in the 800m due to stepping out of her lane. Davis moved into eighth place after the ruling to pick up the point.
Davis, the only South Carolina athlete competing on Friday, got off to a strong start, setting a new personal best in the 60-meter hurdles. Her 8.45 was good enough for fourth place and gave her 1,028 points to kick off the day.
Moving on to the high jump, the Gamecock passed on the first two heights of the progression and moved through the next five. On her third attempt at 5-4 ¼ (1.63m), she cleared to move on again, but missed on three attempts at 5-5 ¼ (1.66m). The 5-4 ¼ was her second new PR in as many events, shattering her previous personal best of 5-1 ¾ (1.57m), which she set at the Randal Tyson Track Center less than two weeks ago. The ninth-place finish in the event put her in the 6th place in the point standings after two events with 1,799 points.
In the shot put, Davis set another PR, tossing for 34-00 ¾ (10.34m) on her first throw. The California native picked up 554 points for her finish, making her point-total 2,353 after three events, putting her in eighth place overall.
The athletes then moved onto the long jump. In her final attempt, Davis hit the mark of 18-5 ¼ (5.62m), her best of the day. The jump was good enough to hold her spot in the overall standings, before moving on to the 800 meters, the final event of the day. Davis ran a time of 2:26.35 in the race, finishing sixth in the run and collecting 739 points.
Tomorrow, action kicks into high gear on day two with prelims in the 60 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, mile run and 60-meter hurdles. The SEC will crown champions in the men’s weight throw, women’s pole vault, women’s shot put and the 3,000 meters on Saturday as well. The men’s weight throw kicks off the day at 11 a.m. ET.
