COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina track and field head coach Curtis Frye and assistant head coach Delethea Quarles have been named to the coaching staff for the 14th IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Moscow, Russia, USA Track & Field announced Thursday.

Frye has been tapped as one of four assistant coaches on the men’s staff. He will be in charge of sprints and hurdles. Quarles is a member of the women’s staff and will oversee jumps and combined events.

Other Team USA experience on Frye’s resume includes an appointment as an assistant coach for the 1999 IAAF World Championships in Seville, Spain, where the US led the medal count with 17 medals including 10 golds. In 2001, Frye was named the US men’s head coach at the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia.

Frye also led a large South Carolina contingent to the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics as he was tabbed to as an assistant coach for the USA Olympic women’s track and field team to work with sprinters and the relays. Nine current and former Gamecocks were among the Olympians. Three of the athletes returned home as Olympic gold medalists.

This marks the sixth time Quarles has been appointed as a Team USA staff member. Most recently, she was a part of the Team USA coach staff at the 2011 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Daegu, South Korea, as an assistant coach in charge of vertical and horizontal jumps. In her capacity, Quarles worked on a staff that saw Team USA’s jumpers claim five medals at the World Championships, four of which were gold. The medal haul included an American sweep of the long jump golds.

Prior to 2011, Quarles previously worked with Team USA as head coach at the 2007 Pan American Junior Championships and as an assistant coach for the 2006 World Cup, 2005 Pan American Championships and 2002 Team USA vs. the Netherlands.

The World Outdoor Championships will be held Aug. 10-18, 2013.
