CHARLESTON, SC – Paul Williams allowed only one run in seven and one third innings of work and David Griffin’s RBI double with the bases loaded in the sixth inning scored three runs to lead The Citadel over No. 3 South Carolina, 5-1, Wednesday evening at Riley Park.
Williams is 1-3 on the year, with the loss going to junior RHP Rocky Evans. Evans in now 0-1 on the year. Junior shorstop Drew Meyer finished 2-for-4 with one RBI to lead the Gamecocks, in his return to his hometown of Charleston.
The win moves The Citadel to 13-11 on the year, with the Gamecocks at 21-5 on the season. USC returns home for a weekend series vs. No. 5 Alabama, first pitch on Friday is 7 p.m.
The Citadel struck first in the second inning. A one out RBI single by Josh Stackley scored Jon Aughey to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs finished their scoring up in the sixth inning. Will Coker blooped a single into left field to score Aughey and increase the Bulldog lead to 2-0. With the bases loaded and a 1-2 count, Griffin knocked a double into center field to clear the bases for a 5-0 lead.
Carolina rallied in the eighth inning with a run. Brian Buscher led off the inning with a double, and scored on a two-out RBI single by Drew Meyer. With runners on first and third, Bulldog reliever Randy Corn struck out Steve Thomas to end Carolina’s rally.
South Carolina pitched a predetermined split and had four pitchers in the game. Freshman Aaron Rawl worked the most innings of his Gamecock career in relief of Evans, throwing 3 1/3 innings and striking out six batters, a season-high. Evans also tied a season-high with four strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings worked.
