COLUMBIA, S.C. – Freshman Julie Sarratt stunned Coastal Carolina in her collegiate debut, tossing the 44th no-hitter in South Carolina history in a 5-0 Gamecock win in the second game on Saturday afternoon at Beckham Field.

Sarratt (1-0) walked one and had just one other base runner in the no-no, striking out five Chanticleers. Sarratt also made an impact at the plate in her first game for the Garnet and Black, singling in her first at bat and later doubling home a run.

Junior second baseman Evan Childs helped back the Gaffney, S.C., freshman, hitting a two-run homer. Junior left fielder Kaitlin Westfall went 2-for-2 with a run scored, while junior first baseman Molly Brossart had an RBI. Sophomore shortstop Samie Garcia went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Brossart gave the Gamecocks all the runs they needed in the third, as her sacrifice fly allowed Garcia to score from third. Carolina tacked on four more runs in the fifth, as Childs hit her two-run homer to left center to start the scoring in the frame. Sophomore right fielder Hannah Milks scored from third after a throw got away on the infield. Sarratt capped the scoring with her double down the left-field line, plating Westfall from first.

With two down in the seventh, Chelsea Pineda laced a 1-1 pitch toward the right-centerfield gap. Milks closed hard and made the catch with her outstretched arm on the warning track to save the no-hitter and close the game.

Chanticleer starter Ashley Bagwell (1-1) took the loss, giving up two runs, one earned, on seven hits and two walks, while striking out five. Jessie Winans drew the lone CCU walk in the second, while Jazmin Daigle reached on an error in the first.

The Gamecocks close out the Palmetto State Showdown on Sunday afternoon against USC Upstate. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. EST.
