Coach Anderson After Round 2

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Tough scoring conditions on Thursday afternoon at the Texas A&M Traditions Club led to a difficult day for South Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship. The Gamecocks dropped to 19th place after a round of 315 (+27) and stand at 617 (+41) for the week.

The winds picked up as the Gamecocks played in the afternoon flight with Ohio State and Purdue. The Buckeyes had similar difficulties, posting an identical team score to Carolina, and many of the teams that played in the afternoon had difficulty scoring.

Freshman Samantha Swinehart led the Gamecock effort today with a 77 (+5), improving by one shot over her first-round effort. She made the turn at even par after carding birdies at 14 and 18 along with bogeys at 15 and 16. But the front nine proved a tougher test as she made five bogeys over her final nine holes to finish at 5-over for the day.

Fellow freshman Katie Rose Higgins had the biggest improvement on the day with a 7-over-par 79, five shots better than Wednesday’s first round. After recording a triple-bogey 8 on her first hole, she then made pars on seven of her next eight holes and made the turn at 4-over. She played the second nine in 3-over with bogeys at Nos. 1, 5 and 6, but finished with three straight pars.

Amanda Strang got off to a slow start with four consecutive bogeys to open her round, but was able to play her final 14 holes at just 3-over as she finished with a 79 (+7). She made birdie at 16 and bogey at 18 to turn at 4-over, then made par on her last five holes to finish strong after a double-bogey and two bogeys (along with a birdie) on her first four holes of the second nine.

Junior Katie Burnett, who entered the day just two shots off the lead, had a tough day with an 8-over-par 80. Five double-bogeys were the downfall of her round, but she did finish strong with two birdies and three pars over her last five holes to remain the Gamecocks’ top scorer overall. Suzie Lee posted an 83 (+11) on Thursday.

UCLA maintained its tournament lead at 584 (+8), three shots ahead of Purdue at 587 (+11) and four clear of LSU (+12). Tournament host Texas A&M is fourth at 589 (+13). Individually, LSU’s Austin Ernst came within a shot of the course record with a 6-under-par 66 to vault her way to a three-shot lead at 138 (-6). Purdue’s Numa Gulyanamitta is in second at 141 (-3) with a three-way tie for third place at 2-under.

The Gamecocks will play in the morning wave of tee times Friday, starting at 8 a.m. on the No. 1 tee. Carolina will be paired with Notre Dame and UC Davis. Live scoring is available through NCAA.com; updates from the course are available by following @GamecockWGolf on Twitter.
