Greenville, SC – The South Carolina women’s golf team fired a team score of 291 on Sunday to finish in second place at the Lady Paladin Invitational in Greenville, South Carolina. The Lady Gamecocks finished with a team score of 884 for the weekend, four strokes back of the tournament winner Furman. This is the Lady Gamecocks’ best finish of the year and look to continue their good play into next week’s final Fall tournament in Auburn, Alabama.
The 28th ranked Lady Gamecocks finished ahead of three teams that were ranked higher in the nation: 10th ranked Tulane, 15th ranked North Carolina, and 23rd ranked Florida State. South Carolina also finished ahead of the other three SEC teams in the tournament field.
Defending SEC Champion Kristy McPherson fired a two-over par 74 on Sunday (220) and finished in a tie for fifth place, her second Top Five and third Top 10 finish on the year. Junior Kory Thompson fired her second straight 73 and freshman Erica Battle (playing as an individual only) shot a three-over par 75 on Sunday. The two finished in a tie for eighth place (221), the highest finish for both in their collegiate career.
Sophomore Adrienne Gautreaux had the lowest round of the day for the Lady Gamecocks, firing a two-under par 70 to finish with a 224 and in a tie for 20th place. Junior Marci Robinson recorded her second straight 74 on Sunday to finish with a 226 and in a tie for 28th place. Sophomore Tiffany Catafygiotu shot a 79 to finish with a 230 and in a tie for 38th place.
Furman, the tournament host, shot a 292 Sunday to win the team competition with a total score of 880. South Carolina finished second with an 884 and TCU was three strokes back in third place. North Carolina (890) finished in fourth place with Tulane rounding out the top five with an 897.
Brooke Tull of TCU fired her second straight 69 on Sunday to win the individual competition with a total score of four-under par 212. Leigh Turner of Furman was just one stroke back to finish in second place with Ashley Prange of North Carolina and Brandi Jackson of Furman tied for third place, each with a score of 216. McPherson was in a three-way tie for fifth place.
