ALPHARETTA, Ga. – In his first varsity event, sophomore Dykes Harbin helped pace South Carolina in the opening round of the U.S. Collegiate Championship on Sunday at The Golf Club of Georgia.

Harbin, along with freshman Logan Harrell, shot matching scores of 76 (+4) to lead the Gamecocks in a tough opening round. Carolina posted a team score of 306 (+18) to stand in 14th place through one round of play among some of the nation’s elite teams.

Despite posting a pair of double-bogeys on the front nine, Harbin kept it together with birdies at Nos. 4, 7 and 9, making the turn at 3-over. He fought his way back to 2-over with a birdie at the 607-yard par-5 11th hole, then made five pars and two bogeys on his final seven holes to finish at 4-over for the day. Harrell had seven pars and a birdie on his front nine, but his one blemish was disastrous as a quadruple-bogey at the sixth hole dropped him to 3-over at the turn. A bogey at No. 10 and a double-bogey at the 13th were nearly offset by a pair of birdies at 12 and 14 as he shot 1-over 37 on the back nine to finish at 4-over-par for the day.

Junior Wesley Bryan and freshman Caulder Moore both shot rounds of 77 (+5) to open their stay at The Golf Club of Georgia. Bryan made six pars on the front nine with bogeys at Nos. 1 and 7, but lost three shots with a triple-bogey at the ninth hole. Two more bogeys in the first five holes of the back nine dropped him to 7-over, but he finished strong with birdies at 17 and 18 to post a 5-over day. Moore started strong with an opening birdie, but lost seven shots from the fourth through ninth holes to make the turn at 6-over. However, he had the best back nine of any Gamecock, shooting a 1-under 35 with birdies at 12 and 13 to overcome a bogey at the 14th. Freshman Blaine Woodruff carded four birdies, but had five bogeys, a double and a triple en route to an opening 78 (+6).

Tournament host Georgia Tech shot a blistering 271 (-17) to hold a 13-shot lead over Texas A&M (-4). Top-ranked UCLA is in third place at 2-under 286. The Yellow Jackets’ James White lapped the field with a 10-under-par 62, taking a 7-shot lead over five individuals that all shot 69 (-3).

Carolina will be paired with Southern California and Georgia State for Monday’s second round, which gets underway at 9:10 a.m. on the No. 1 tee. Live scoring is available through golfstatresults.com.
