GREENVILLE, S.C. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team picked up five singles victories in six matches Friday at the Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, S.C.
In flight one, Anya Morgina topped Monica Arguello of Furman 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals. Two Gamecocks scored 6-0, 6-0 victories with Katerina Popova downing Laurianne Henry of Clemson in flight three and Madeleine Saari-Byström defeating Furman’s Susan Bitetti in flight five. In flight four, Miljana Jocic scored a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tennessee’s Whitney Wofford. Dominika Kanakova upended Megan Gornet from Vanderbilt in flight six 6-2, 6-2. Dijana Stojic suffered a three-set loss to Vanderbilt’s Chelsea Preeg 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in flight two to mark her first defeat of the fall.
In doubles, the Gamecocks won two matches in six tries between their three doubles tandems. Kanakova and Stojic lost to Durisic and Lyons from North Carolina in their first match 8-3 but rebounded with an 8-3 win against Arguello and Oudin of Furman in the backdraw. Popova and Saari-Byström lost 8-3 to Slater and Stone of UNC before coming back to win 8-5 against Vandy’s Radeva and Gornet.
The singles portion of the Furman Fall Classic will wrap up Saturday with two rounds and the final doubles matches will take place Sunday morning.
