Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina junior outfielder/infielder Whit Merrifield has been selected in the ninth round of the 2010 MLB Draft. Merrifield was the 269th overall pick in the draft by the Kansas City Royals. He is the second current Gamecock player to be selected in this year’s draft.

Whit Merrifield is now batting .332 (84-for-253) on the year with a team-leading 12 HR and 38 RBI on the year. He is second in the SEC in runs scored with 68 and leads the SEC as well with 13 sacrifice bunts. With 252 career hits, he is now seventh on the USC All-Time hits list. He is 12 behind Andrew Crisp (2005 -09) for sixth on the all-time list.

Merrifield continues to be one of the top bats in the Southeastern Conference and recently received 2009-10 Earnest Brooks Co-Male Student-Athlete of the Year honors at South Carolina along with men’s golfer George Bryan IV.

Earlier this year Merrifield set the school record for consecutive games with a hit. He hit safely in 26 straight games, 14 at the end of 2009 and the first 12 games of 2010. He has made 171 consecutive starts for the Gamecocks dating back to March 7, 2008.
