First-Generation Staff: What advice do you have for out First Generation Gamecocks?
“My biggest piece of advice is always remember your "Why," and that "you BELONG!" You've made it this far in the face of adversity and belong at this institution....through it all remember your reason for doing this. Whether your "why" is your aspirations for giving back to the community you came from or making sure your younger self is proud of you.”
Michelle Knight - Executive Assistant and Office Manager Colonial Life Arena
“ Be intentional about finding your community. College is a lot to navigate, and you do not have to do it alone! Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Remember you are the first in your family to do what you are doing and create the blueprint for those who come after you.”
Elizabeth Gloria - Football & Men’s Golf Academic Advisor
“My main advice would be to find a community. I came to South Carolina from five hours away without knowing a single soul ahead of time, but I was in the Carolina Band, so I got here and automatically had a built-in community...finding a community helped me to navigate all of the new experiences and independence that come with college.”
Miranda Giddens - Women’s Basketball & Women’s Track & Field Academic Advisor
“Ease into the experience. Be curious about what college has to offer. The educational opportunities are not just in the classroom. Learn about the different options you have and then jump into it. College is what you make of it.”
Val Gerfin - Associate Director of Live Productions
