COLUMBIA, S.C. – Freshman first baseman Meghan Cornett was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for softball, due to her efforts last week against Georgia and Kentucky. This marks the third SEC player of the week honor for Carolina, the second in as many weeks.
Cornett hit .611 for the week as she went 11-for-18 with four runs scored, four RBIs and two home runs. The Cocoa, Fla. native also recorded a hit in all six games and scored a run in all but two games, as the Gamecocks went 5-1. Her home run in game three against Kentucky broke a scoreless tie and led USC to a series sweep.
For the season, Cornett is hitting .305 and is one of four players to start every game for the Gamecocks. She is currently tied for first on the team in hits with 43 and is second for RBIs with 25.
The Gamecocks travel to Gainesville this weekend to take on the Florida Gators in a three-game series. USC is 34-12 overall, 15-6 in the SEC and are in first-place in the Eastern division.
