COLUMBIA, SC – Five South Carolina pitchers combined on a seven hit shutout Wednesday night and Drew Meyer and Trey Dyson hit home runs as the fourth ranked Gamecocks defeated Wofford 11-0 in a non-conference baseball game.
South Carolina collected 13 hits and scored in every inning but the second in improving its record to 24-6. Wofford dropped to 19-13. Chris Spigner, 2-0, pitched 5 1/3 innings to earn the win. Nick Hewitt, 0-1, was charged with the loss.
Meyer hit his third home run of the season in the fourth inning and Dyson his ninth with a teammate on base in the fifth inning. Yaron Peters had four hits, including a double, and drove in one run to increase his season total to 45 in 30 games. Garris Gonce had two hits, including a triple, and Meyer had two hits. Kevin Melillo had a double.
Steve Casey and Tony Carbone had two hits apiece for Wofford. All of the Terrier hits were singles.
South Carolina scored four runs in the first inning, two in the fifth, and one each in the third, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth.
The Gamecocks committed one error and turned one double play while Wofford played errorless baseball.
Six pitchers used by Wofford did not walk a batter but struck out only one. Gamecock pinch hitter Kyle Pope fanned in the eighth inning.
South Carolina travels to Fayetteville, Ark., for a three game weekend Southeastern Conference series with Arkansas.
