USC advanced six to the two finals tomorrow as Mamee Groves continued to throw well with the 20lb. weight in the first day of the Meet of Champions in New York City.

The women are ranked No. 2 nationally and the men are No. 13.

Groves threw 60′ 3 to finish fourth in one of the most compeitive indoor 20lb. weight’s of the year. It was her second best performance ever.

Demetria Washington advanced to the finals of the 400m with a time of 53.73 – the top time of the day. Washington will be joined in the finals by teammates Lashinda Demus (54.19) and Shevon Stoddart (54.52). All three times were NCAA provisional marks.

In the women’s 200m, freshman Erica Whipple ran a personal best of 23.50 – an NCAA provisional mark – to advance to tomorrow’s final. Joining her will be Aleen Bailey (23.84) and Lisa Barber (24.07).

In the men’s 200m, James Law finished ninth overall in the heats at 21.80 with Andre Totton running a 22.03 to finish 12th in the heats. Neither advanced to the finals.
