Sept. 1, 2001

Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina’s Jenny Lake and Rachel Smith finished one-two at the Western Carolina Invitational to lift the Gamecocks to a second place finish. USC scored 46 points in the nine-team field. Host Western Carolina finished first with 39 points, while Clemson finished third with 70 points.

Lake, a freshman from Geneseo, Ill., ran a top time of 19:02 to win the 5K race. Smith, finishing second, posted a time of 19:26.

“I was very happy the way we ran today,” stated Cross Country Coach Stan Rosenthal. “We would of liked to have finished first instead of second, but overall we did well. Our freshman showed that they will have a big impact on our team throughout the year.”

The University of South Carolina hosts the Gamecock Invitational Saturday, Sept. 8 at Hilton Field. The women’s race will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by the men’s race at 9:45 a.m.
