May 3, 2002

Columbia, S.C. – The South Carolina softball team will close out the 2002 regular season as they host Ole Miss in a three-game series on Sat., May 4 and Sun. May 5. Game times are slated for a 1 p.m. start. USC leads the SEC Eastern division and needs one more win to claim their fourth consecutive division title. The weekend will also mark the final regular season home games for seniors Megan Matthews and Adrianna Baggetta. The decorated careers of these two seniors will be recognized prior to Sunday’s game.

It has been two years since USC and Ole Miss last met. In 2001, the series was canceled due to inclement weather. The Gamecocks split the series doubleheader with Ole Miss in 2000 and lead the overall series 8-1.

Ole Miss is currently 25-26 overall, 7-20 in the SEC and was swept by No. 3 LSU in their last outing. The Rebels’ last win was a 6-3 victory over Georgia in Athens on April 21.

The Gamecocks are 38-16, 17-10 in the SEC and just two wins away from recording their fourth consecutive 40-win season. A sweep over Ole Miss would give Carolina a 20-win season in SEC competition. Matthews is just two wins away from 100 career victories and would become only the second pitcher in USC history to reach this milestone.

In honor of Senior weekend, USC softball t-shirts will be thrown out at the game for every strikeout recorded by Matthews and every hit by Baggetta.
