Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina men’s golf team beings the 2002 NCAA Regionals in Roswell, Ga. on Thursday, May 16. The Gamecocks, in their seventh-consecutive NCAA Regional, tees off at 12:45 p.m. with Virginia and College of Charleston. USC is in the last threesome to tee off on Thursday at the Ansley Golf Club’s Settin’ Down Creek.
Freshman Martin Rominger, currently 11th in the Southeastern Conference, has carried the team this season with a 72.5 stroke average. The Pontresine, Switzerland native posted four top 10 finishes and six top 20 finishes. On Feb. 6 Rominger was named SEC Golfer of the Week for his efforts at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate. He finished 10th in the prestigious golf tournament after firing 211. Rominger’s best finish of the season was a tie for second at the Seminole Intercollegiate on March 12.
Joining Rominger in Roswell, Ga. is freshman Alex Hamilton. Hamilton’s s best finish of 17th place came on April 7 at the Cleveland Golf-Augusta State Invitational. Rounding out the five-man squad is redshirt sophomore Nash Elliot and freshmen Matt Robinson and Jonathan Jackson.
The top 10 teams from each region (east, west and central) will advance to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio on May 29-June 1. The top two individuals from each region will also advance to the NCAA Championships.
