COLUMBIA, S.C. ? Play opened up today amid 100-degree heat in the Wachovia
South Carolina Closed Junior Hardcourt Championships today as three ranked
singles players and two ranked doubles teams were defeated.

Competition continues Saturday at four sites ? the Columbia Tennis
Center, the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center (USC women?s courts), the Sam Daniel
Tennis Center (USC men?s courts) and the USC Indoor Facility. Saturday?s
action begins at 8:00 a.m.

In the Boys 18s division, No. 9 Brooks Whiteside of Columbia will face
Omar Ladhani of Simpsonville while top-seeded Joseph Carvalho of Rock Hill
will square-off against Collin Jewell of Murrells Inlet. In the doubles
draw, Taylor Calcote and Bennett Evers upset fourth-ranked Joseph Carvalho
and Andrew Ellison 8-4.

In the Girls 18s division, Columbia?s Jenny Barker will face top-seeded
Tara Harness of Greenville as all of the top seeds in the draw received
first-round byes. Jenny Barker also notched a win in the doubles portion as
she and Elizabeth Dabbs of Blythwood recorded an 8-5 win over Kathryn
Klecklev and Sarah Taylor, both of Lexington.

More than 350 of the state?s top junior tennis players are taking part
in the annual event held on the University of South Carolina campus. Boys
and girls are competing in five different age divisions ? 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s
and 18s ? in both singles and doubles action.
