Columbia, S.C. –
The competition heated up Monday at the Wachovia South Carolina Closed Junior Hardcourt Championships. Late afternoon thunderstorms delayed some of the boys’ matches until early evening but did not stop the top seed and defending champion, Joseph Carvalho of Rock Hill from advancing to the semifinals in the boys’ 18 singles division.

Play will continue through Wednesday at four sites – the Columbia Tennis Center, Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center (USC women’s courts), Sam Daniel Tennis Center (USC men’s courts) and USC Indoor Facility. Tuesday’s action begins at 8:30 a.m. and will last into the afternoon.

Carvalho defeated Taylor Calcote of Charleston, 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals on Tuesday against Andrew Ellison of Columbia, the only unseeded player to advance to semifinals with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Columbia’s Brooks Whiteside. The number two seed boys’ 18 player, Lance Kefalos of Columbia also heads into Tuesday’s semifinals with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Carl Hocker of Spartanburg. In the boys’ 16 doubles finals Garret Egan of Mt. Pleasant and Tradd Robinson of Sullivan’s Island claimed the title by defeating John Robert Killey and Patrick Rogers of Columbia; In the girls’ 10 doubles finals,
number one seeds Avery Owens of Clinton and Alexis Prickett of Columbia defeated Carson Lunceford and Erin Westerkam, both of Columbia, 7-8, 6-0; while in the girls’ 12 doubles finals top seeded Sally Bartelmo and Cayla Gunter defeated Lauren Bookout and Catlin Marsh, 7-8, 6-2.

More than 350 of the state’s top junior tennis players are taking part in the annual event, as boys and girls compete in five different age divisions – 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s – in both singles and doubles action.
