Berlin, Germany – South Carolina swimmer Istvan Bathazi continued his success at the 2002 European Championships with a second place finish in the 400 individual medley. Bathazi finished the 400-meter event with a time of 4:17.33. Earlier in the week, Bathazi earned fifth place in the 200 IM (2:00.92).

Bathazi and former Gamecock All-American Zsolt Gaspar each competed in the event for their native country Hungary. Gaspar placed eighth in the 50 free.

Bathazi holds the top times in Carolina history in both the 200 yard and 400 yard individual medley. Bathazi finished ninth at the 2002 NCAA Championships in the 400 IM, winning the consolation final with a personal best 3:45.76, breaking his own school record he set as a freshman. Bathazi will return to Carolina for his junior year. The Gamecocks open the season on Oct. 18 vs. Charleston.
