Three University of South Carolina women’s tennis players advance to the finals of the Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, South Carolina. South Carolina’s Ayako Suzuki, Magda Wojdylo, and Danielle Wiggins all won two matches in their respected flight tournaments to make it to the finals.
Ayako Suzuki will play tomorrow versus Audra Falk of Vanderbilt in the flight two championship match. Suzuki lost the first set to Ioana Paun of Clemson, 6-0 but won the next two sets 6-4, 6-4. With that win, she then faced Steffi Hoch to a three-set match. After losing the first set 6-1, Suzuki responded wins in straight sets 7-6(5), 6-2.
In flight three, Freshman Danielle Wiggins recorded her first career victory over Alise Cogger of Wisconsin 6-1, 6-2. Wiggins then defeated Deni Alexandrova in the semi-finals 6-2, 6-3. Wiggins will face Kori Scott of Vanderbilt tomorrow for the championship of flight three singles.
Sophomore Magda Wojdylo advances to the final of flight four versus Vanderbilt’s Ashley Schellhas. Wojdylo defeated Shellie Cochran of Furman 6-2, 6-1, and then faced Clemson’s Laurence Jayet. Jayet defeated Wojdylo 6-4 in the first set but Wojdylo prevailed in the next two sets 6-2, 6-2.
In flight five, Catherine Brown lost her opening match to Gloria Okino of Iowa 6-4, 6-1. She then defeated Furman’s Krista Thomson 7-5, 6-2. Tomorrow, Brown will face Lexi Goldin of Wisconsin for 5th place.
Kathy Boyanovich, ranked 63rd in the nation fell to No. 31 Manon Kruse of Vanderbilt 7-5, 6-2. Boyanovich’s second match of the afternoon was against Kruse’s teammate Aleke Tsoubanos. Boyanovich defeated Tsoubanos 7-6(5), 7-5. Boyanovich will battle Cassie Haas of Iowa tomorrow for 5th place in flight one.
Jodi Kenoyer was also in flight one with Boyanovich. Kenoyer was defeated by tenth ranked Sarah Riske 6-2, 6-2. Kenoyer was also defeated by Cassie Haas of Iowa 6-2, 6-4. She will face Tsoubanos for seventh place in flight one.
Audrey George was defeated in straight sets by Ashlea Bowen of Clemson 7-5, 6-3 in flight six. George was the lone Gamecock in flight six.
The Furman Fall Classic will continue tomorrow in Greenville, South Carolina starting at 9am. The Lady Gamecocks will return home next week to host the annual Lady Gamecock Classic.
