Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina men’s soccer fell to Davidson, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium. Davidson improves to 5-2-1 while the Gamecocks fall to 7-1-1.
Senior Joel Sadler tallied the lone goal of the afternoon at 58:29. Ben Kittinger brought the ball down the far side of the field before crossing the ball to Sadler at the top of the box. Sadler then delivered the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal to give Davidson the 1-0 advantage.
South Carolina mounted a charge late in the contest to try and force overtime. The Gamecocks had three straight corner kicks with 20 minutes remaining but were unable to convert. With just under seven minutes to go, Jack Cummings had a shot blocked by freshman Will Carroll in front of an open net.
In the first half, neither team had many scoring chances. At 38:56, USC’s Ryan Deter laced a shot that hit the outside of the near post. South Carolina outshot Davidson 5-3 in the first stanza.
The Gamecocks return to action Sunday, Oct. 6 when they welcome arch-rival Clemson. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
