Charleston, S.C. – David Marchbanks pitched seven strong innings Saturday and South Carolina used two big innings and a 16 hit attack to down Old Dominion 10-3 in the second round of the ESPN Radio 1340 Baseball Shootout at Joseph Riley Park.
The Gamecocks improved to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in the shootout and will meet The Citadel, the host team, at 5 p.m., Sunday to conclude the event. The Citadel, a 9-4 loser to Tennessee Friday night, met Vanderbilt in the final game of the second round. Old Dominion, which opened its season Friday with a 2-0 shutout of Vanderbilt, fell to 1-1.
Marchbanks allowed six hits and three runs, only one of them earned. He struck out three and for the second consecutive start did not walk a batter. Old Dominion starter Richard Shefka, 0-1, gave up eight hits and five earned runs in 3 1/3 innings and was charged with the loss.
Freshman left-hander Forrest Beverly relieved Marchbanks in the eighth inning and allowed one hit in two innings. He struck out one.
After falling behind 3-0 , the Gamecocks scored four times each in the second and seventh innings and single runs in the fourth and six.
Kevin Melillo and Jon Coutlangus had three hits each. One of the Coutlangus hits was a triple. Landon Powell had two, including a double and his first home run of the season, a solo shot leading off the four run seventh. Brian Buscher also had two hits, including a double. Nick Gardiner had two hits, including a triple. Michael Campbell had a double for the Gamecocks.
Melillo drove in three runs and Powell two. Other Gamecock RBI were by Justin Harris, Buscher, Tim Seaton and Coutlangus.
Allen Strick was the only Old Dominion player with two hits. Jesse Schoendiest had the only extra base hit for the Monarchs, a second inning triple that drove in the first ODU run. Other Old Dominion runs were driven in by Derrick James and Pedro Pena.
