COLUMBIA, S.C. – Matt Campbell held Duquesne hitless into the eighth inning Sunday when Steve Maiolo blooped a single to left field and South Carolina settled for a 9-0 shutout to sweep a three game non-conference college baseball series.
Campbell allowed only two base runners in eight innings, a third inning walk, and the one out hit by Maiolo. Steven Bondurant pitched the ninth inning and allowed one infield hit as the Gamecocks ended with a two hitter.
Campbell struck out nine and won his first decision of the season. He has one save. South Carolina improved its record to 8-1 and Duquesne fell to 0-3. Duquesne starter Adam Haun, 0-1, was charged with the loss.
South Carolina scored three runs without a hit in the first inning as neither team had a hit until the fifth inning. The 3-0 lead resulted from three walks, a hit batter, a fielder’s choice and three wild pitches by Haun. A walk and singles by Brian Buscher and Landon Powell, the first hits of the game, made it 4-0 in the fifth inning.
South Carolina added three runs in the seventh. Kevin Melillo walked, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on the second RBI hit of the game by Powell. Freshman Trey McDaniel hit his second home run of the season to make it 7-0. An error, a RBI double by Jon Coutlangus and a wild pitch added the final two unearned runs in the eighth inning.
Buscher stretched his consecutive game hitting streak to nine with his fifth inning single, a hard ground ball that Duquesne shortstop Dan Schwartzbauer made a diving stop on but was unable to complete the play. Justin Harris was hitless in four official at bats to end his hitting streak at eight games.
South Carolina scored nine runs on only six hits with Powell the only Gamecock with two hits. McDaniel drove in three runs with his two run homer and a bases loaded walk in the first inning. Three Duquesne pitchers walked seven, threw five wild pitches, hit one Gamecock batter, and committed a balk.
Melillo scored three runs and Powell scored twice.
South Carolina’s next action is a two game weekend series with in state rival Clemson. The Gamecocks and Tigers meet at 1 p.m., Saturday in Doug Kingsmore Stadium at Clemson and the series shifts to Sarge Frye Field in Columbia for a 1:30 p.m., game on Sunday. South Carolina is ranked seventh in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll and Clemson is 17th in the same poll.
