Columbia, S.C. – On Sunday afternoon at the USC indoor facility, the 23rd ranked University of South Carolina women’s tennis team defeated the Middle Tennessee Lady Raiders 5-2. The win improved the Gamecocks to 4-1 on the season while Middle Tennessee dropped to 2-9.
The Gamecocks started out strong by winning two of the three doubles match-ups. In the flight one doubles, Kathy Boyanovich and Magda Wojdylo upset the 29th ranked doubles team of Manon Kruse and Stacy Varnell 8-6. The win improved the duo to 4-1 on the season. In the number two match-up, seniors Jodi Kenoyer and Catherine Brown defeated Carien Venter and Emily Vest 8-3. Jennifer Klaschka and Laura McNamara of Middle Tennessee defeated South Carolina’s number three doubles tandem of Justine Walsh and Danielle Wiggins 8-4.
Entering the singles part of the match-up, USC held a 1-0 lead but they would need help from the bottom of the line-up to win the match. The Gamecocks dropped the top two spots but took the last four match-ups. Manon Kruse, ranked 53rd in the nation, defeated Boyanovich in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. Jennifer Klaschka was victorious in the number two flight against Kenoyer of USC 6-2,6-1. The flight three match-up turned to be the most exciting of the day as Venter and Wiggins battled it out on court three for three sets. Wiggins won the first set 6-0 but Venter would win the second set 6-3 to force a third and final set. Wiggins would edge Venter 7-6(7-5) in the tiebreaker to improve her record to 10-6. On court four, Wojdylo took Varnell in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 while Brown took McNamara in straights as well 6-3,7-5(7-5). Walsh, the newcomer from Vancouver, defeated Vest 6-2, 6-2. Winning the doubles point and taking four of the six doubles gave USC the 5-2 victory.
South Carolina will start SEC play this Friday as they take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs at 1:30pm and then on Sunday, the Gamecocks host Mississippi at 1pm.
