Columbia, S.C. – he 24th ranked University of South Carolina women’s tennis team won a nail-biter, 4-3 against Ole Miss on Sunday afternoon at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Facility. The Gamecocks improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the SEC while the Rebels dropped to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the SEC. The win was the third straight against the Rebels.

The Gamecocks started out fast as they took two of the three double matches. Magda Wojdylo and Kathy Boyanovich upset 34th ranked Mira Radu and Virginia Tomatis in number one doubles, 8-1. In flight two, Jodi Kenoyer and Danielle Wiggins defeated Sabrina Peppl and Audra Adams 8-1. Karem Harboe and Florencia Basile of Ole Miss took the number three doubles 8-3 over Justine Walsh and Catherine Brown. The doubles point proved to be crucial because of splitting the single matches.

The Gamecocks went up 2-0 when Kenoyer cruised past Basile 6-0,6-0 in the number two singles battle. Adams of Ole Miss defeated Walsh easily in straight sets 6-1,6-1 to make the score 2-1. Peppl, then won in straight sets versus USC’s Brown to even the match at 2 points a piece. On court three, Wiggins finally was able to put Harboe away in the second set 6-4 after winning easily in the first set 6-2. Radu, ranked 24th in the country in singles lost her first set to Boyanovich in the number one singles 6-4 but then cruised past Boyanovich in the last two sets 6-0,6-0. Radu’s match even the match once again at three a piece. The final match came down to Wojdylo of South Carolina and Tomatis of Ole Miss.

Tomatis took the opening set in the number four match-up 6-2. Wojdylo would bounce back to take a 5-0 lead in the second set but the relentless Tomatis would come back to even the score at 5 but Wojdylo would go on to win the set 7-5 to force a deciding set that would determine the victor. Wojdylo would go on to take the final set 6-3 to give the Gamecocks the 4-3 win over the Rebels.

South Carolina hopes to keep rolling as they head to play LSU on Friday and on Sunday, the Gamecocks will battle the Razorbacks of Arkansas.
