Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team fell to the 13th ranked Wildcats of Kentucky 4-3 on Sunday at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center in Columbia. The loss dropped South Carolina to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the SEC while the Wildcats improved to 14-6 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

In doubles, Kentucky took two of the three matches to take a 1-0 lead over the Gamecocks going into singles play. The hot doubles team of Danielle Wiggins and Jodi Kenoyer defeated Jill Bradwell and Jill Buckley 8-6. The pair have now won five of their last six matches. The 18th ranked duo of Sarah Witten and Amy Trefethen defeated South Carolina’s Kathy Boyanovich and Magda Wojdylo 8-4 on court one while Nathalie Roels and Shannon Stafford defeated Catherine Brown and Audrey George 8-1 at number three doubles.

Heading into singles action, the Wildcats held a 1-0 advantage over the Gamecocks. On court four, Magda Wojdylo of USC was ahead 3-2 but Shannon Stafford was forced to retire because of an injury. This tied the match a one all. The Wildcats would quickly go back up when Amy Trefethen defeated Catherine Brown at number five singles in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Sarah Witten gave the Kentucky a 3-1 advantage when she defeated Kathy Boyanovich 7-6,6-2 at number one singles.

Down 3-1, the Gamecocks gave it all they had. The remaining matches all went to three sets. On court two Jodi Kenoyer dropped her first set 6-4 to Nathaile Roels. Kenoyer would come back in the second set to defeat Roels 6-1. In the third set, Kenoyer took a 4-3 lead but Roels would go on to get the win 6-4 and give the overall match to the Wildcats.

On court three, Danielle Wiggins made an amazing comeback to defeat Jill Buckley in three sets. Wiggins, the freshman from Jacksonville, Florida, lost her first set 6-3 and was trailing 3-0 in the second until she made her comeback. Wiggins took the second set 6-4, and went on to win the third set 6-2.

Justine Walsh took the number six singles match for the Gamecocks in three sets. Walsh defeated Shannon Stough 7-5 in the first set but lost the second set 6-2. In the final set, Walsh took control and defeated Stough 6-4 to make the overall score of the match 4-3.

South Carolina returns to action on Tuesday when they host the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at 1:30pm.
