Fayetteville, Ark. – The 13th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks improved to 21-7, 5-2 in the SEC as they defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks (16-20, 4-10 SEC) 6-1 in game two to sweep the Tuesday doubleheader. Nancy Crane went 3-for-3 while Amber Curtis went 3-for-4, scored two runs and had an RBI. Meghan Cornett hit her first home run of the season and went 2-for-3 at the plate with one run and two RBIs. Pitcher Melanie Henkes improved to 11-2 for the year and Aleca Johnson recorded her second save of the season. Johnson pitched three innings and struck out seven of the nine batters she faced.

In part two of the doubleheader, Carolina once again took an early lead as first baseman Cornett hit her first home run of the season and drove in two to give USC a 2-0 lead in the second inning. In the third, Crane and Curtis recorded back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Crane eventually scored on an error by Arkansas and Curtis came home on an RBI single by Danielle Quinones, to give Carolina two more runs and a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Razorbacks got on the board in the fourth when Ruth Atkins hit a one-out triple and eventually scored on an RBI single by Kim Eiben. In the bottom of the fifth, Arkansas had a runner at second with no outs but sophomore reliever Aleca Johnson came in, struck out two and forced a ground out to protect Carolina’s 4-1 lead. USC added two more runs in the seventh on an RBI double by Curtis and RBI single by Jodi Fittro, giving Carolina a 6-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Arkansas was unsuccessful in their attempts to rally as Johnson struck out all three batters to close out the game and give Carolina its first SEC road series of the year. The Gamecocks will attempt to sweep the series when they play the final game on Wednesday at 2 p.m. (CT).
