Browns Summit, N.C. – The South Carolina women’s golf team is in second place after Friday’s round at the Bryan National Collegiate in Browns Summit, N.C. The Lady Gamecocks fired a 294, and trail Duke by eight strokes.

Defending SEC Champion Kristy McPherson is tied for the lead after the opening round. McPherson recorded a three-under par 69 and is tied with Duke’s Kristina Engstrom. Junior Marci Robinson also had a good day, firing a two-over par 74 and is currently tied for 16th place.

Senior Kacy Thompson is one stroke back of Robinson, firing a 75 and is tied for 26th place. Sophomore Tiffany Catafygiotu is next in line with a four-over par 76 and is tied for 34th place. Junior Kory Thompson wraps up the Lady Gamecock scoring with an 81, which puts her in a tie for 65th place.

Duke leads the field with a 286, followed by South Carolina. Tulsa and Wake Forest are tied for third place with a score of 297. Auburn, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee are all tied for fifth place with a 298.

Engstrom and McPherson are tied for first place heading into Saturday’s second round. Jessica Shepley of Tennessee is in third place after recording a two-under par 70 on the day. Duke’s Leigh Ann Hardin and Vanderbilt’s May Wood are tied for fourth place with a one-under par 71.
