Knoxville, TN – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team fell 4-1 to the 11th ranked Tennessee Volunteers on Sunday in Knoxville, Tennessee. The loss dropped USC to 12-8 overall and 5-5 in the SEC while the Volunteers improved to 18-5 and 8-2 in the SEC.

The Gamecock double teams took only one of the three matches in doubles. The 6th ranked doubles of Vilmarie Castellvi and Melissa Shaub defeated USC’s Kathy Boyanovich and Jodi Kenoyer 8-1. The 52nd ranked doubles team of Crystal Cleveland and Sabita Maharaj clinched the doubles point for the Lady Vols when they won 8-2 over Audrey George and Catherine Brown. Danielle Wiggins and Magda Wojdylo upset 35th ranked Tammy Encina and Majen Immink 8-6. Wiggins and Wojdylo were down 6-2 but the relentless Gamecock duo came back to take USC’s only double win on the afternoon.

In singles, the Gamecocks came up short as a couple of matches went to three sets. Third-ranked Castellvi defeated Boyanovich in straight sets 6-3,6-2 at number one singles to put the Lady Vols up 2-0. Jodi Kenoyer would win USC’s only point with a win against Encina in straight sets 7-6(6),6-2. Schuab needed three sets to defeat Wojdylo 0-6,6-3,6-1 at number four. Cleveland, ranked 104th in the country, clinched the victory for the Lady Vols at number three singles when she defeated Wiggins 6-1,1-6,6-4.

The Gamecocks end their tough road stretch next week when they travel to Gainesville to face the 5th ranked Florida Gators. The match with Florida is also USC’s last regular season match of the season before the Gamecocks travel to the SEC Tournament in Knoxville, TN on April 17-21.
