Sept. 9, 2003

Tanagura, Japan – The University of South Carolina women’s golf team sits in second place after Tuesday’s first round of the 2003 Topy Cup. The women’s side of the tournament features two American colleges, USC and California-Berkeley, in addition to three Japanese teams.

The Gamecocks shot a 19-over 307 as they trail leader Cal-Berkeley by seven strokes (300) at the Tanagura Country Club in Tanagura, Japan.

Gamecock golfers Adrienne Gautreaux, Marci Robinson and Tiffany Catafygiotu each opened with a 76 on the first day to grab a share of sixth place. Catafygiotu recorded two birdies on the front nine to turn with a one-under 35. Unfortunately, she posted four bogeys and a triple bogey to offset her additional two birdies in the final nine holes. The leader, Sarah Huarte from California, leads with a one-under 71 after 18 holes.

Laura McCaslin fired a 79 in her first round as a Gamecock (15th place) while Kory Thompson is 27th after starting with an 84 on Tuesday.

The teams return to the course Wednesday for the second round of 18 before concluding on Thursday. An overall champion will be named in the five-team tournament.

Japan is approximately 14 hours ahead of South Carolina so results will not be reported to the United States until Thursday morning.
