Columbia, S.C. – Junior Jenny Lake never was challenged Friday evening on her way to a convincing victory during the University Women Seeded division race at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, N.C. Freshman Karen Wigal finished 14th and as a team South Carolina placed seventh.

Lake completed the one-mile mark with a 20-meter lead and extended it to 100 meters during the final mile as she cruised to a 20-second victory during the 5K race held at SAS Soccer Park. Karen Wigal continues to impress as she finished in a time of 19:34.

“It was a great race for Jenny (Lake) and Karen Wigal, they did a really good job,” commented Head Coach Stan Rosenthal. “Karen Wigal had a great race, she ran the whole time between 10th and 15th position and finished in 14th.”

A combination of rough footing, 85-degree heat and three-fourths of the race ran uphill caused for a tough course. Rounding out the lineup competing for South Carolina was senior Mary Wright and freshmen Nicki Breves, Julie Reale and Christine Mudd.
