CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Marcus Westman and Carl Wermee continued to roll for the South Carolina men’s tennis program Friday at the Omni-ITA Region II Indoor Regional Championships at the University of North Carolina. Both Westman and Wermee now advance to Saturday’s round of 16.
Westman, seeded 12th in the singles bracket, posted a win over Steven Ward Friday 6-0, 6-4. Westman advanced to Friday’s action by topping Arturo Aguirre 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 Thursday evening. Westman will face fifth-seeded Scott Schnugg Saturday morning.
Wermee posted the upset of the day, notching a victory over eighth-seeded Rylan Rizza 6-4, 6-3. Wermee stopped Joao Menano 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 Thursday evening and will try for another upset as he faces ninth-seeded Jeff Kader Saturday morning.
In other action Friday, Tom Eklund fell in the round of 32 to Peter Rodrigues, 6-3, 6-3. Eklund advanced to face Rodrigues after stopping Julio Moran on Thursday evening 6-4, 1-6, 6-0.
Also on Thursday, Ben Atkinson fell to Izak van der Merwe 7-5, 6-2 while in doubles action, second-seeded Jenkins and Thompson topped the duo of Atkinson and Wermee 8-6.
Action at the Omni-ITA Region II Indoor Regional Championships continue Saturday morning.
