Nov. 2, 2003

Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team closed out the 2003 Southern Intercollegiate Tournament by taking home two single and double championships. Freshman Christyn Lucas clinched the A2 singles championship on Sunday with her victory over Winthrop’s Takahaski. Earlier in the day, Lucas teamed with Magda Wojdylo to win the A2 Doubles Title over Emmrich and Grage of Armstrong Atlantic State 8-6.

Ayako Suzuki and Miranda Gutierrez were the other doubles team to take home their flight championship. Suzuki and Gutierrez won 8-6 over Georgia Tech’s Silverio and Anson on Sunday. Suzuki also competed in her singles flight for the title but fell to teammate Grace Blakely 6-3, 7-5.

In doubles, the Gamecocks placed no lower than third place in any of the flights that they participated in. In singles, USC placed two champions, but also fielded three individuals that were runner-up in their draw.

“I was pleased with our performance this weekend,” said USC Women’s Tennis Head Coach Arlo Elkins. “We had five players who competed for their flights championship and two of the girls competed against each other so we had a chance at four of the finals to win but came away with two of them but the two we did win were won by freshman.”

USC will next be in action this weekend, November 7-9 in Atlanta, Georgia for the SEC Coaches Fall Tournament.
