In conjunction with their 10th anniversary, USC basketball senior Mike Boynton, Jr., will be awarded the WFMV Carolina Gospel Award for service and leadership in the area of sports on Saturday night. WFMV is a part of Glory Communications.

As part of their celebration, Boynton will be recognized with other individuals for the service and leadership that has made a positive contribution in their communities.

“This award is an honor. It shows that people recognize you outside of being an athlete – it gives you a sense of worth that they don’t just see you as a person who goes to school and plays basketball,” said Boynton, a 6-2 guard from Brooklyn, N.Y. “Community service is important to me because it shows you recognize that you have an opportunity to have an effect on others through the exposure you receive on television and on the radio.

“As athletes, we are role models. As a captain, taking on a leadership role this year entails so much for me,” said Boynton. “You are not only doing things right for yourself, but you are showing others the positive way to do things as well. My parents are excited about this award because it shows them that the values and morals they instilled in their son go further than the basketball court.”

Boynton was also recognized last season for his efforts in the community when he was named to the SEC Good Works Team.

The awards ceremony is Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center in Columbia. For further information on the awards call Monica Wahington at 803-939-9530.
