Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina women’s basketball team evened their record to 1-1 on the early season with a 82-66 win over Appalachian State on Monday night in the Colonial Center. The Gamecocks were paced by senior Kelly Morrone who had 19 points and six assists in front of the USC fans at the Colonial Center.
USC started out slow as the Mountaineers, 0-1, jumped out to an early 13-9 lead over the first six and a half minutes but the Gamecocks would finally get their offense into high gear. South Carolina would go on a 17-2 run to take a 26-15 lead with 8:05 remaining in the first half. The Gamecocks would never look back as they went on to hold a 43-29 advantage at the half.
In the second half, the Mountaineers cut the lead down to 11 with 16:14 left but the Gamecocks would go on another run to extend the lead to 22 with 11:28 and go on to win the game 82-66.
Sarah Burgess who made her first career start tallied nine points and a career high seven assists. Larissa Kulcsar added 15 while Iva Sliskovic chipped in 15 to give South Carolina three players in double figures. Also scoring for South Carolina was Lauren Simms with nine, Olga Gritsaeva with seven and Lea Fabbri with five.
The Gamecocks return to action on Wednesday, November 26 when they host Mercer at 7 p.m.
