Columbia, S.C. – The USC Equestrian team defeated the Kansas State Wildcats in the varsity format competition at the Irish Oaks Equestrian Centre on Saturday, February 7. The final score was 1,070 to 970.50 in favor of the Gamecocks.
In Equitation, Sarah Lowe led all competitors with 79 points. Her teammate, Kelley Campbell also preformed well with 74 points. Dana Hancock, Carly Johns, and Tara Brothers all contributed with 66 points.
In Equitation Over Fences, Chelsea Koornick received the most points among all riders with a score of 74 points. Her teammate, Brothers was second among the riders. She received a score of 72 points.
In the Western portion of the competition, Courtney Borton led Horsemanship with a score of 65 points. In Western Reining, Rachel Sternoff led USC and tied Brandi Vogel from Kansas State with a score of 68.75.
“This was our first varsity competition that we have hosted this year,” said Head Coach Boo Duncan. “I thought that the riders rode very well and everyone put in a solid performance. I was pleased with the team effort and the fact that many people contributed. It was nice that both the Western and Huntseat teams won all of their divisions. “
The Gamecocks will host another varsity meet at Irish Oaks on Friday, February 13, at 2:00 p.m. against the Bulldogs.
“Georgia will be difficult. It was beneficial to have competed against Kansas State before we host Georgia on this Friday. Georgia is very familiar with the varsity format. The Bulldogs are a very good team. We will definitely be challenged next week.”
The USC team accumulated various individuals awards at the meet and they are as follows:
